The Museo Castiglioni in Varese, Lombardy, is a significant ethnographic and archaeological museum that presents the extensive collection of the brothers Angelo and Alfredo Castiglioni. These two researchers dedicated over sixty years to the study and documentation of African cultures and archaeologies.
History and Background
The Castiglioni brothers conducted numerous expeditions to various African regions, collecting thousands of artifacts, photographs, and film materials. Their research significantly contributed to the understanding of the material and religious cultures of numerous African peoples. In 1991, they were awarded the Medaglia d'oro ai benemeriti della scuola della cultura e dell'arte by the President of the Republic of Italy, in recognition of their contribution to culture and science.
Collection and Exhibitions
The museum is divided into two main areas:
Archaeological Collection: This area includes finds from Ancient Egypt and prehistoric artifacts. Particularly noteworthy are the casts of prehistoric rock engravings from Wadi Bergiug in Libya, which are over 10,000 years old. Another focus is on the discovery of the ancient city of Berenice Pancrisia in Sudan, referred to by Pliny the Elder as the "City of Gold." The history of gold mining during the time of the Pharaohs is also explored here.
Ethnographic Collection: This area focuses on the cultures of the African savannah and desert. Of particular note is the reconstruction of a Tuareg camp, carried out with original materials and in the traditional Tuareg style. This unique exhibition provides a deep insight into the nomadic life and traditions of this people.
