The "Il Combattente - Monument to the Fallen of Alessandria" is a significant monument in Alessandria dedicated to the fallen of both World Wars. It was inaugurated in 1937 and is located in the public gardens of the city. The monument was created by the sculptor Gaetano Orsolini and depicts a soldier in armor riding a horse while holding a sword hilt in his right hand. The soldier is only dressed in a cape and a helmet, symbolizing his bravery and willingness to sacrifice.
On the front and back of the pedestal, there are bronze reliefs depicting scenes from the lives of soldiers: saying goodbye to family, life in the trenches, the flag, and the assault. On the sides of the pedestal, granite wings are carved, embodying the allegory of victory. At the base of the monument, the names of the fallen soldiers from Alessandria during World War I are engraved on the ground and on the sides. The names of the fallen from World War II are also listed on the back of the pedestal.
The monument is located in an area surrounded by iron chains and pillars, emphasizing its significance and respect for the fallen. It serves as a place of remembrance and reflection for the citizens of Alessandria and visitors who wish to honor the victims of war.
The "Il Combattente - Monumento ai Caduti di Alessandria" is an impressive example of Italy's war memorials and reflects the city's deep connection to its history and the victims of war.
