Museo dei Bozzetti

Museum | Pietrasanta | Tuscany | Italy

The Museo dei Bozzetti in Pietrasanta, Italy, is a unique museum dedicated to the documentation and collection of models created by international artists working in the workshops of Pietrasanta and Versilia. These models serve as preliminary studies for the final sculptures and offer a fascinating insight into the creative process of the artists.

History and significance

The museum was founded in 1984 and is located in the former Sant'Agostino monastery, a building from the 16th century. It was established to preserve the tradition of sculpture in Pietrasanta and highlight the city's importance as a center of sculpture. Pietrasanta has a long history as a hub for artists, especially sculptors, who utilize the local marble quarries and bronze foundries.

Collections and exhibitions

The museum houses over 700 bozzetti from more than 350 artists, including both Italian and international names. The collection includes works by artists such as Niki de Saint Phalle, Giò Pomodoro, Igor Mitoraj, and Fernando Botero. These models, mainly made of plaster, represent the original ideas of the artists before being realized in the final sculptures.

In addition to the bozzetti, the museum has an extensive archive of documents and photographs that document the history of sculpture in the region and are accessible to researchers and enthusiasts.

Educational and cultural offerings

The museum is actively involved in educational outreach and offers various programs for schools and the general public. These include workshops, temporary exhibitions, and events that keep the cultural heritage of the region alive and accessible to a wide audience.

Overall, the Museo dei Bozzetti represents a significant cultural treasure of the region and invites visitors to discover the history, art, and culture of Pietrasanta and Versilia.
